Square Enix has reintroduced the next mainline Dragon Quest as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, replacing the earlier subtitle The Flames of Fate. The update arrived during the series’ 40th anniversary broadcast on May 27, where the team also showed the first snippets of in-engine footage.
The presentation was framed as a reset for the long-announced sequel. The series’ leadership explained that the project hit hurdles over the past few years and was reorganized, with development restarted to better define what a numbered Dragon Quest should be. The new look focused on the hero, party members, and a handful of enemies, offering a clearer sense of the tone without getting into heavy plot specifics.
There was no release window or platform list, and Square Enix avoided any talk of combat changes or structural overhauls. That restraint matters: when Dragon Quest XII was first unveiled in 2021, the team hinted at a darker story and new ideas. With the reboot and new title, it’s wise to treat those old talking points as outdated until the studio says otherwise.
