Early access launches rarely make this kind of splash. Unknown Worlds’ Subnautica 2 reached more than 2 million copies sold within 12 hours of its early access debut on May 15, 2026, rocketing to the top of Steam’s global charts and driving huge concurrent-player peaks across storefronts.
Numbers that don’t come up for air
A publisher dispatch reproduced by 4Gamer says Subnautica 2 cleared the 2 million-sales mark just half a day after early access began. Early telemetry the studio shared shows a peak of more than 467,000 concurrent players on Steam, and a combined peak of 651,000+ across Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox—about nine times the all-time concurrent peak of the 2018 original.
The release also notes a streaming surge: peak viewership of roughly 413,000 on Twitch and 109,000 on YouTube Live at launch, while the title topped sales charts in multiple regions including Japan, the U.S., China and Korea.
